Role Overview

We’re looking for talented Interaction Designers to join our growing Design team. As an Interaction Designer at Mercator, you’ll play a vital role in creating intuitive, accessible, and effective user interfaces for digital services that serve millions of users across the UK public sector.

Working within multidisciplinary teams, you’ll help transform complex processes into simple, user-friendly digital experiences. You’ll create user flows, wireframes and interactive prototypes, collaborating with researchers, designers and developers to ensure services meet user needs and government standards. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with design experience looking to make a real difference to public services.

What You’ll Do

  • Create user flows, wireframes, and interactive prototypes using HTML and CSS to
    demonstrate how users will interact with services
  • Work closely with User Researchers to understand user needs and behaviours, absorbing and synthesising research insights to inform design decisions 
  • Design accessible interfaces that work across different devices and platforms
  • Contribute to and maintain design systems and pattern libraries
  • Lead design activities for services, providing direction and establishing design patterns 
  • Participate in user research sessions and usability testing
  • Iterate designs based on user feedback and research insights
  • Coach others in design thinking and prototyping techniques 
  • Collaborate with content designers, developers, and other team members in multidisciplinary Agile teams 
  • Handle stakeholder relationships and manage expectations effectively 
  • Identify and effectively work within constraints, challenging them where appropriate 
  • Help ensure designs meet government accessibility requirements and service standards
  • Document design decisions and maintain design documentation

What You’ll Bring

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Design Foundations: Strong understanding of user-centred design principles and interaction design patterns
  • Journey Mapping: Experience using collaborative tools such as Mural and Figma to map user journeys and workflows 
  • Accessibility: Thorough understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design principles
  • Prototyping: Ability to create dynamic and interactive prototypes using HTML and CSS to demonstrate user journeys
  • Communication: Clear written and verbal communication skills for explaining design decisions
  • Collaboration: Experience working as part of a team of multidisciplinary teams in Agile environments 
  • Problem-solving: Analytical approach to understanding and solving design challenges
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to understand the bigger picture and translate it into practical design solutions  
  • Leadership: Experience contributing to the development of design concepts and guiding others  
  • User Research Integration: Ability to absorb and synthesise large amounts of information to produce simple designs

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Experience with the GOV.UK Prototype Kit  
  • Experience with the GOV.UK Service Manual and Design System
  • Previous experience in user research or usability testing
  • Portfolio demonstrating interaction design work
  • Experience with responsive design
  • Knowledge of service design principles
  • Experience implementing and extending the GOV.UK Design System  
  • Experience working on complex government services  
  • Experience conducting design reviews and providing constructive feedback 
  • Ability to mentor other designers
